Use sections, blocks and templates

Know which changes apply to one section, one template or the whole storefront.

Choose the right level

AreaWhat it changes
Theme settingsShared design rules such as colors, typography, product cards and cart behavior.
Header and Footer groupsShared navigation and footer content across normal storefront pages. The password layout is separate.
TemplateThe arrangement used by resources assigned to that template. Editing a shared product template affects all products using it.
SectionOne module on the selected template, such as Product showcase or Gallery.
BlockAn item inside a section, such as a collection card, slide, footer menu or product information row.

Add or rearrange content

  1. Select the page or resource template you want to edit in the top template selector.
  2. Under Template, choose Add section. Search the section name in the section catalog, then select it.
  3. Open the new section to choose its layout and content. Add and reorder its blocks where available.
  4. Move the section using the editor’s reorder controls. Check desktop and mobile preview, then Save.

Some sections are fixed to a particular template or group. Collection page, Collections page, Product, Article and Password are template sections; Footer and Header belong to their groups. They are not all separate options in the normal Add section picker.

Connect content before styling

A resource picker links to a product, collection, blog, article, page or menu already in your store. If the picker is empty, create or publish the resource in Shopify first. A blank data-driven section may have nothing to show on the storefront even while its settings remain available in the editor.

Use a separate template for a different layout

Create a new template from the editor’s template selector when a product or page needs a different arrangement. Then assign that template to the resource in Shopify. Changing the preview resource alone does not create a new template or isolate its layout.
